Happy Halloween!

This year I had no time to carve pumpkins or anything. We don't even have freaking candy. BOO! I love Halloween though. But we aren't planning anything special. I might make a special dinner and just chill.

This year Tom is here with me so if any demented killer jesters show up at the door, I will make sure he answers the door.

The screamy girl got into the spirit of Halloween and went all Jason and Freddy on me. But she did it with her tiara on! God, I love a little blood and mayhem! BOO!

Random WillyNillyness Cooking Presents: Pan de Muertos (Bread of the Dead)

Okay I lied. I am posting a Sabroso Saturday recipe on this blog. As you all know, I am doing a campaign for Chocolate Milk so I was posting my Sabroso Saturday posts on my other blog, The Art of Random Willynillyness. I still am doing those posts so go check out my Chocolate Tapioca recipe. YUM!
I am cheating this week. This is not my recipe and I did not make this bread. Here is how this all got started. On Thursday, one of the teachers at my work came into my office and asked me if I wanted some Pan de Muertos. Now you all know that I am a huge Day of the Dead fanatic so I knew exactly what she was talking about.

She actually got the Pan de Muertos from her husband who also teaches there. He was teaching the kids about Dia de Los Muertos in class and one of the student's mom made the bread to share with the kids. There was some extra bread so her husband offered her some and, in turn, she brought me some too.

I love Pan de Muertos. And believe it or not, I was going to try and make it but after seeing the recipe, I thought I would hold off. Well I still got my Bread of the Dead and had to do nothing for it! YAY ME! Of course, I will thank the mom when I see her because if was way tasty.

I didn't make this recipe but I thought I would share it with you. For a little more info on Dia de los Muertos, head on over to Mex Grocer because they have a nice little explanation and history. Plus they have other cool recipes.

Day of the Dead Bread: Pan de Muertos

Ingredientes - Ingredients:
Una taza y media de harina - 1 1/2 cups of flour
Media taza da azúcar - 1/2 cup of sugar
Una cucharadita de sal - 1 teaspoon of salt
Una cucharada de semillas de anís - 1 tablespoon of anise seed
Dos paquetitos de levadura - 2 packets of dry yeast
Media taza de leche - 1/2 cup of milk
Media taza de agua - 1/2 cup of water
Media taza de mantequilla - 1/2 cup of butter
Cuatro huevos - 4 eggs
Entre tres y cuatro y media tazas de harina - from 3 - 4 1/2 cups of flour

Preparation: Mix all dry ingredients together except the 3 - 4 1/2 cups of flour.
In a small pan, heat the milk, the water, and the butter. Add the liquid mixture to the dry mixture.
Beat well.
Mix in the eggs and 1 1/2 cups of flour. Beat well.
Put in the rest of the flour, little by little.
Knead the mixture on a floured board for 9 - 10 minutes.
Put the dough in a greased bowl and allow it to rise until it has doubled in size (about an hour and a half at sea level).
Punch the dough down and reshape it with some "bone" shapes on top to decorate it.
Let it rise another hour.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for about 40 minutes.
After baking, sprinkle it with confectioner's sugar and colored sugar.

Preparación: Mezcle todos los ingredientes secos menos las 3 - 4 1/2 tazas de harina.
En una olla caliente la leche, el agua y la mantequilla. Añada la mezcla líquida a la mezcla de ingredientes secos.
Bátalo bien.
Agregue los huevos y una taza y media de harina. Bátalo bien.
Agregue el resto de la harina poco a poco.
Sobre una tabla enharinada, amase por unos 9 - 10 minutos la mezcla.
Ponga la masa en un recipiente engrasado, y deje que levante hasta que haya doblado su tamaño (aproximadamente hora y media al nivel del mar).
Para que la masa se encoja, déle puñetazos y fórmela de nuevo con unos "huesos" de masa encima para decorarla.
Deje que levante una hora más.
Hornee a 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) por unos 40 minutos.
Después de hornearlo, espolvoréele azúcar glas y azúcar coloreado.

Franklin, Bryson City and the Nantahala River ~ Western North Carolina

I promised no more Fall pictures but we went on a drive again and I had to share. This time we drive up towards a town called Franklin. Tom went all willy-nilly on me and picked a random road to drive up. It was beautiful. We ended up at the Nantahala River around Bryson City. I had never been up there. Tom had because he went rafting. And y'all know by now I HATE HATE HATE rafting.

Anyway, I, of course, took a billion pictures and you get to see them! WOO. Be thankful Fall is almost over because I will have to stop with the Fall pictures.

Fall on the Blue Ridge Parkway

I hope you are loving the Fall pictures because I have them up the wazoo! This is worse than my garden and veggie photos. But it is just so beautiful around here, I HAD to share.

These were taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I hope you enjoy them because I am so enjoying how beautiful it is up here during Fall. I think I enjoyed it last year but now that I actually have to get my lazy butt up and go to work everyday, I see so much more. My drive to work is still super incredible although I think the peak was this week. Luckily, we still have a bout a week around our area before it peaks. I might do one more series of pictures of the house but I will stop boring you with Fall pics and go back to the mundane stuff!
