We finally decided to leave the confines of our resort. Our sister-in-law, Sandy, found us a tour company so we called up Shorty Tours and booked a trip.
We decided to go to Dunns River Falls since this was the one place everyone said we should see. Our trip was from 9am to 3pm. We would drive out to the Falls, then do some shopping, have lunch and then come back.
We were off early. Shorty was a great guide and a nice guy. We started our trek outside the gates not knowing what the day would bring.
What was really funny as we drove around the countryside was that Jamaica reminded me so much of Costa Rica. It was really beautiful.
Before heading off to the Falls, Shorty took us to Columbus Park at Discovery Bay. It was sort of cool because that was where Columbus landed when he discovered Jamaica. Now you all know I am not a huge Columbus fan although our wedding anniversary is sort of on Columbus Day but it was a neat place to visit. So much history was involved. It was a funky monkey park that looked like no one really takes care of it but it was still historic nonetheless.
Our next stop was Dunns River Falls. When we arrived there was busloads of people who had come off the cruise ships. Shorty took us down and bought the entrance tickets. It cost $15 to go into the park and it was so well worth it. The Falls were amazing.
We were divided into groups and then got a lecture on what to do and what not to do. The Fall guide then walked us all the way down to the beach to begin the climb. Now I knew I was not going to do the climb before we got there. Let's face it folks, I am a wussy girl. I am also a slacker and hate any outdoor activity. Luckily, they have stairs for the chicken people like me. But I have to say that there were a lot of people NOT doing the climb so I wasn't the only wussy slacker there.
Dunns River Falls is an amazing site. I can't even tell you how beautiful it was. I am not sure my vlogs or photos do it justice. It is amazing to see how these Falls are shaped and how high they go from the beach. It is really something everyone should see.
I shadowed Tom all the way up the Falls on the sidelines taking pictures and video of him. You can go check out random Dunns River Falls videos on my YouTube account. I took some random shots so Tom could see himself climbing.
It took a while but Tom finished the climb. I was surprised there were no accidents with so many people doing the climb. I am glad I got to see the Falls but also glad I didn't make the climb. There was no doubt I would have freaked out and cracked my head or something.
Once Tom finished, we headed off again. We went to the town nearby, which was a total tourist spot, to do some shopping. I think this little place is there for the cruise ship passengers. The had a Hard Rock and tons of shops. But the prices weren't terrible.
We picked up a few items to take back home with us. It is always good to buy a little something. We also picked up some coffee. People say Jamaican coffee is the best in the world. I had to see for myself since I am such a huge fan of Costa Rican coffee and believe that is the best ever! Okay, I'm biased, sue me.
After shopping we headed back toward Montego Bay and stopped at a little restaurant called Scotchies. It was a Jerk BBQ place. But not BBQ in the way we think of BBQ. They were cooking their food mainly pork (YUMMO!!) and chicken on an open flame. What was unique was that they had the fire, then they had wood laid out over the fire and then they placed the meats over the sticks of wood to cook. They used tin slats to cover the meat as it cooked. I had never seen anything like it.
It is also a very cute little place with little huts around the compound with picnic tables. Everything is in the open. It is also surrounded by beautiful gardens. It was really cool. It wasn't fancy but the food was great.
We ordered some chicken and pork and some yams and festival. Festival is like a fried dough. If you ever had churros or fry bread, it is sort of like that. But it is not sweet just absolutely delish!!
The food was amazing. The meat picked up a delicious smoky flavor from the wood used. It was served on aluminum foil. Luckily, Shorty got us some chile sauce they serve. It was amazing. It was so freaking hot but oh so delicious!! I had never had anything like it. It was so hot when you tasted it but then it mellowed out. I realized then that the name of this place, Scotchies, was referring to the Scotch Bonnet pepper they used in the sauce.
I have never had Scotch Bonnet peppers although I have always wanted to and now I can say I finally did. If you have never heard of Scotch Bonnet peppers, then go check this out. It is one of the hottest peppers in the world. Who knew it was so damn good.
After lunch, we headed back to the resort. We had a great adventure with Shorty. I would recommend him to anyone. The price was reasonable. Shorty was really personable and we had a great time. It was nice to have our own private adventure. We are so not tour people but hiring a driver and sort of making up your own trip is definitely the way to go.
It was also nice to get out and see a little of Jamaica. If we hadn't done it, I think we would have missed out. I really wish we had taken another day to do another adventure. It is safe to say that both of us we go back to Jamaica in a heartbeat. There was just something about it that made us feel comfortable and it was a place that we wanted to explore more of.
So that was our trip outside the walls of the resort and it was a really a great one. I am posting tons of pictures for you to enjoy!!
