My adventure in Miami! Part 1

You all know by now that I was in Miami courtesy of Telemundo Networks. Telemundo chose some bloggers and invited us for a once in a lifetime adventure.

There is so much to talk about that I am having a hard time deciding what to write and how many posts to write. I could write a whole post on the Mondrian South Beach which was such a funky monkey hotel. It was really unique. I could write a whole post on just the Latin Billboards because it was so cool to attend an event such as that. Then meeting the executives and talent of Telemundo was fantastic as was the tour of the Telemundo Studios.

I think I will just start writing and see what comes out. I have to say that it was a lot of fun. I saw some old friends and met some new ones. All the bloggers chosen were great and although we were all pretty different and our blogs are very diverse, it was a great group.

Of course, it is never a trip if something doesn't happen at the airport. I think the Asheville airport is my nemesis. It never fails that when I fly out of there, there is a delay. It happened when I went to Costa Rica a few weeks ago and it happened again this time.

I ended up having to spend the night in Charlotte and flying out the next morning to Miami. My bag ended up at Fort Lauderdale but thankfully it arrived safe and sound at the hotel. YAY! But even if I missed the morning sessions of the event, I was able to do everything else. I also met a couple at the Charlotte airport who were in the same situation and because they didn't speak English, I was able to do a good deed and help them out. You all know I am all about the Karma because I am always in need of Karma points!

What I loved about this trip is that even though I am very gringa, there is this other part of me that is very Latina. This trip touched on that Latina side. I grew up on novelas. I also grew up listening to Latin music so it was such a thrill to be part of this event.

Anyhow, I got to Miami and, luckily, I was able to be picked up and taken to the Telemundo offices. I got there just in time for lunch with some of the Telemundo talent which included Gaby Espino, Jorge Bernal, Vanessa Huac, Enrique Acevedo, Karim Mendiburu, Sammy Sadovnik and Jessi Losada.

It was an interesting conversation and we all shared our views on social media and it was actually my favorite part of the whole event. It was amazing to hear how they understood social media and how it is being used. It was also nice to see how nice they all were. (Okay once again having issue with pictures from my Blackberry, grrr, I can't get them straight regardless of what I do)

I have to admit I had a geek out moment when I saw Jessi Losada sitting at the table. I am not a huge sports fan per se but I remember watching him when I watched soccer games with my dad. I instantly recognized him. It was like cool, I bet my dad would be impressed right now.

After that round table we heard from the Exec. VP of Digital Media and Integrated Solutions, Borja Perez, and his team. I realized that Telemundo really has a great strategy on how to go forward and admired that they really thought it through. It was very interesting. I enjoyed it.

We left the Telemundo offices to go watch the rehearsals of the Latin Billboards. As we drove, I realized that we were going to the University of Miami, my alma mater. I wish I would have had the time to walk around campus. I spent a few years there and hadn't been back for quite a few years. Although it has been so long, I had a few moments when I remembered my time at UM.

We were taken on a tour around the BankUnited Center. We saw the backstage, the lounge area, dressing rooms and the stage. We even caught a little of the band Mana rehearsing for the show. Love Mana! The song "Viver Sin Aire" is one of my all time favorites. If you have never heard of them, I am sad for you. But just go on YouTube and check them out. You will not be disappointed.

I have to say that I was totally impressed with the set. It was really cool and when we were at the show live, it was even more impressive. I even texted Tom during the show to tell him how amazing the lights were. I knew he would have appreciated it since (for all you who do not know) he is a lighting designer but for theatre.

Next on our whirlwind trip was going back to the hotel to change for dinner. Dinner was with Telemundo executives at Cecconi's, SoHo House. It was delish. It was fun talking to everyone and the food was very good. After dinner, we headed off to the mun2 (Telemundo's sister station geared toward young Latinos) RPM Miami party. RPM Miami is a new show on the station. Now you all know me, I am old and live in the country so even though it was a great venue and the party was fun, some of us left early and caught a cab back to the hotel.

It was a long day but it was a lot of fun and I had a wonderful time. But I was so ready for bed and let me tell you that the Mondrian had the best bed ever! (Remember to check out my hotel room vlog.) I crawled right in and surrounded myself with the best pillows ever and passed out. Not even the creepy little girl in my room could keep me up. I wanted to stay in bed forever.

Okay, I will do another post for Day 2 since I am just rambling on and on, as usual!

I hate my Blackberry photos. Sometimes they come out lopsided although I edit them 100,000 times. So you will have to deal with demented pictures. Sorry.

Disclosure: Telemundo Networks paid for my hotel, airfare and some extras to attend this event. All opinions, however, are solely mine.

  1. Wow!!! What a fabulous event. It's so nice to hear that they "get" the whole social media and blogger thing.

And I cracked up when you said you were in need of karma points. Glad you put a few back on your list with your good deeds.
