Sort of Wordless Wednesday - Tom's Tribute

It's been almost 2 weeks since we lost Shawn. Last Friday, we got her ashes back. Yes, we had her cremated. We still have not decided what to do with the ashes but we figured we could spread them around the house or in the garden. We have no idea but the idea of having her ashes makes us feel a little better.

In any case, last Friday I bawled when Tom brought the ashes home. Yes, I cry more than freaking John Boehner, sue me. This weekend sometime during the weekend I saw that Tom made his own tribute to our little Shawn. He placed some flowers on the mantle next to her ashes.

That was very sweet.

Bloodsuckers make me feel better!

Last Friday, we were doing one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. I have been sad and mopey. I have been wallowing in my misery. I decided that I needed to make myself feel better. I have Fridays off so I decided that I would treat myself to a movie. Now for many that might not be a big deal but we never ever go to the movies.

This began when we lived in Florida. We actually went to the movies all the time but it sort of became a hassle after a while. Every time we would be at a movie, cell phones would ring, people would talk and fidget and, inevitably, although we were in Rated R movies people would feel the need to bring their little babies. The final straw came while watching episode 2 of Lord of the Rings and this idiot kept answering his phone while the movie was going on.

He was sitting next to me and if I wasn't such a delicate flower, I would have punched him in the face. After the 4th time of him answering the phone and then having me, Tom and a few others tell him to take it outside, he got up and went and stood inside the movie theater by the stairs and talked. The usher had to tell him to get off. The 5th time, we all raged and he yelled at us that he had to take the call because he had a sick kid at home and it was the babysitter calling him to let him know the kid was getting worse. WTF? Go the hell home!

After the movie, he almost hit Tom after Tom said he was rude. Luckily, a bunch of other moviegoers whose movie experience was ruined yelled at him and chastised him for being at the movies while having a sick child. What a jerk. That was it for us. We got a big screen TV, upped our Netflix subscriptions and never looked back.

Last year, Tom got crazy and we went to our first movie in years: True Grit. I loved it on the big screen because I worship Jeff Bridges. The movie was terrific and we had no issues. Of course, we now live in a small town in the Western North Carolina Mountains and that might be the difference. People are nicer up here. No offense to my Florida friends but it's true.

Anyway, this week I have tried everything to get myself out of the funk. I have eaten an obscene amount of chocolate given to me by wonderful co-workers who understand that chocolate makes everything better. Since today marks a week of Shawn being gone, I decided that maybe going to a movie and eating an obscene amount of buttery, greasy popcorn and cold soda might also help. Oh yeah and maybe more chocolate.

Now we have a limited amount of choices in our town. Our movie theater shows only 4 movies. In Franklin, a town about 25 minutes from my house they have a few more choices. So I looked around and knew that the only movie that would make me feel better would be: Fright Night.

Some of you know I am a horror film junkie. I also love anything involving bloodsuckers. Tom? He hates horror films and refuses to watch them. He also is not that into vampires although he does watch True Blood but I think he only does that to appease me. So this is the perfect choice since he will not want to see it. Fright Night is actually a horror-comedy. I loved Fright Night when it came out in the 80's. It was cheesy and snarky and had vampires, what else do you need?

When I learned they were remaking it, I was thrilled. And when I found out that Colin Farrell played the main character, a vampire, I was out of my mind thrilled because I love me some Colin Farrell.

Can I ask for anything else? Well yes. I decided to drive to Franklin because about a block from the movie theater is a Thai restaurant. Again, in my small town we have limited choices of food as well. Thai food is a treat.

For a few hours, I will go watch Fright Night and try to forget why I am sad. Then I will go by and get Thai food for dinner. Everyone wins! I get horror, a few laughs, bloodsuckers and Colin and Tom gets green curry. Heaven! I am a woman of simple tastes.

Sort of Wordless Wednesday - Shawn's Last Picture

On Friday before we took Shawnie into the vet, we let her out into the backyard. She had always been an indoor kitty but we thought she might want to spend a little time outside. I think she enjoyed herself.

Yes I am wallowing in self pity of losing my baby but everyday is getting easier. I snapped a few pictures that day to remember her. This was the last one.

R.I.P. Shawn Gonzalez Salzman

"If there ever comes a day when we can't be together, keep me in your heart, I'll stay there forever." ~A.A. Milne, "Winnie-the-Pooh"

This morning, we had to put our little baby, Shawn, down. My heart is broken. I stayed with her until she passed. It was much easier then I thought it would be because it was so peaceful. I cried like a little baby though. Our vet and his assistant were fantastic.

This was one of the most difficult things we had to do but we knew it was the right thing. I miss her already but that's life. Death is always harder on the living.

A few months ago Shawn had gotten sick. After numerous tests the vet discovered she was experiencing the beginnings of renal failure. He said it was something that could not be fixed. We took her in weekly to get fluids. She got meds. She held on for a while but a few weeks ago, she started going downhill. When I was in San Diego, I was so worried the whole time.

Last Friday, we took her in and the vet said it was time to make the decision. We probably could have kept her alive a few more weeks but it was not fair to her because she was having a hard time walking and her system was just shutting down. It would have been selfish to make her suffer because we did not want to make the decision.

She had a good life though. She was also a devil dog from hell. She broke so many things in the house. She ruined so much stuff. She caused so much havoc but we loved her. She was my little girl. She was part of our family.

She loved terrorizing poor Scoutie. I am not sure how Scout will take being the only cat again but I bet deep down inside, she will miss Shawn in her own way.

Bye my little Shawnie, my precious gordita, you will be missed.

I will be offline for awhile.

Wordless Wednesday - Fall already?

I took this picture at the school where I work. Some bushes are already changing colors and we have had some very cool weather lately. Fall is coming. I love Fall.

BlogHer 2011 Recap

I will say that I am just randomly going to write things down as I remember. I am hitting the highlights.

First off, our "Kick Off Your Heels" event rocked the house. But then again, I knew it would because if there is one thing I know and am good at is events. And as we worked on it and I walked through the event in my head, I knew that it would go well and the guests would enjoy themselves.

Okay, now on to the full recap. We arrived Monday and, luckily, Migdalia's friend Jally came to pick us up. That was super duper nice of her. We headed to the Omni Hotel San Diego and it was very nice. We had a one bedroom suite with of view of the party venue.

By the end of the week though that room was filled with a zillion boxes and we left it pretty much a mess. No, we didn't go all Charlie Sheen on the hotel room but there was still so many boxes and stuff left. I left the hotel maids a big fat tip because they had so much to clean up.

I didn't have time to do much of anything except party prep stuff. We managed to walk the Gaslamp district one day and do a little decoration shopping with Jally but mainly it was work. I hadn't been in San Diego in forever. It was very nice. I wish I would have had more time to explore and find Mexican food. Luckily, one day while driving around we spotted a little taco stand and they had the best tacos ever. Oh how I miss Californian Mexican food!

The conference started Thursday. I did manage to hit a party on Wednesday and ran into my good friend Liz, who I love! I know it's weird for non-social media people (practically my whole family) to realize how cool it is to meet people online then meet them in real life. But it is. We even had a chance to sit down and catch up. I hadn't seen her since February!

Anyway on Thursday me and Migdalia went to the conference to pick up our credentials then came back and worked some more. I want to say Friday, party day, but was crazy but not really. I mean I spent 2 days stuffing the goody bags we were giving out, doing nametags and other stuff but we also had some help so it wasn't too bad. My philosophy on events is that if you organize ahead of time, event day should not be stressful.

At 5pm we went down and started setting up. It looked pretty good if I do say so myself. If there is one thing I am good at is planning events. I love doing it and they always seem to come out pretty good! We were also able to make it look nice and not spend too much on decorations. Our best find though was these giant cardboard pink stilettos and cosmo drinks.

Little touches helped as well like confetti in the shape of heels and little plastic high heel charms. The devil is in the details and it makes a difference. After setting up, I went and got ready and came back down to greet the guests. I have to give a shout-out to some great women who volunteered: Heather, Luna, Ruby, Maria, April, Sandrini, Divina and Angelina. It is impossible to throw a good event without great volunteers.

Once an event starts, it sort of takes on a life of its own. I usually walk around and make sure everyone is happy and everything runs smoothly. But if you have done your work beforehand, there shouldn't be any problems. I got to meet so many people that I knew online that had never met. I also got to see my crazy wacky friend Victoria, who is so much fun!

By the time the party ended, I was tired and ready for bed. And that's what I did, go to bed! I have to give a shout-out to our Omni Catering Manager, Renee Herron, who was one of the best catering managers I have ever worked with.

The next day I was able to go to a morning event where we were treated to a pancake breakfast. Yum! Then I headed over to the Expo Hall to see what was going on. It was great. There were a lot of booths and brands and goodies. I met the Jimmy Dean Sun, the Pringles guy and some of my fellow bloggers. I was so happy I was able to see my friend Jen and her family. She is one of the sweetest people I have ever met in my entire life!! I love her and her family. The good thing is she lives in NC too but we never see each other except for conferences!

I went back to the hotel to charge my phone and Migdalia came back with me to the Expo Hall to spend some time there. I had an appointment for a jeans fitting from Lee Jeans and I got the cutest most comfortable pair ever! Then I did the coolest thing ever! I somehow signed up or got signed up to do a Master Cooking Class with chef Marco Pierre White!

Okay you all know I, in my demented mind, believe I am a great chef. So this was so up my alley. It was great. There were 8 of us and we all had our stations up on stage and he taught us to make risotto. I have made risotto before but never under the direction of a real life Michelin Star winning chef! WOO!!! Besides our "Kick Off Your Heels" Party, this was the best thing I did at BlogHer.

Poor devil looked tired because he had been doing this all say but he was so patient and very nice. I did pretty good too and let me tell you that it was a huge thrill. My risotto was delish! We all got autographed books and I have to thank Knorr for the opportunity to have this experience. I so enjoyed it! I wish I could cook with real Chefs all the time!

After the Expo, we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the evening's events. Me and Miggy headed out to go see an advanced screening of the new Disney movie, The Help. OMG it was so good. I laughed, I cried and it if this isn't nominated for an Oscar, I would be surprised. The acting was fantastic!! It was great of Disney to invite to see the movie.

After the movie, we headed to the LATISM (Latinos in Social Media) Social Fiesta. It was a lot of fun. I danced and met up with some more of my friends. I finally got to see my friend Elianne, who I adore. We had a good time as well but then we headed back to the hotel because Migdalia's flight left at 6am and mine at 10am. I barely slept that night but left early to the hotel hoping to catch an earlier flight.

No luck. But I saw a few people I knew at the airport including my friend, Liz. The flight was uneventful. I love that I could order up a movie on a whim. I ended watching Insidious on the way to San Diego and Battle L.A. on the way back. They were pretty good.

When I arrived in Atlanta, I had to get back to my car at the hotel and drive 3 hours to get back home. Suffice it to say, I was damn pooped when I got home. I basically hugged and kissed Tom, kissed the kitties and went to bed because I had to get up to go to work. Blah!

That is my adventure. The problem with recapping my trips a week later is that I forget stuff that I did. But overall the trip was great. Our event went really really well and I got to see some old friends and make new ones. But I am glad to be back home!

This is Renee from the Omni, she rocked.

Wordless Wednesday ~ Be Jealous, be very very jealous!

Yeah there were a lot of celebrities at the BlogHer conference I was at but they didn't float my boat. But as I was walking the Expo Center, I saw a huge star or should I say a huge Sun. I was all over getting my picture with the Jimmy Dean Sun! It was the real guy not some sort of expo impostor!

Yes, I am a geeky weirdo, sue me!

I promise to post something soon!

I got back Sunday night and then had to go to work Monday so I have had no time whatsoever. I have to get back to my real life before I can start blogging again. So hang in there.

I have lots of pictures to post but probably won't do it until this weekend. In the meantime read some of my old posts. My favorite is the: FU Grim Reaper post. Makes me laugh everytime I read it although I almost died.
