Fun in Asheville, NC

The other day my friend Lizzy came over and we headed out to Asheville. Lizzy is my new friend who found me in the internets. She was researching Latina bloggers and came upon Carolyn in Carolina.

She realized we had tons in common and contacted me and, after I decided she wasn't some weirdo stalker or serial killer, we met. She is my sister from another mother. We are a lot alike and it's creepy in a good way.

Anyway, we headed to Asheville to go see art galleries because Lizzy is an artist. She does these awesome cool paintings that I love. It's something she calls "Big Eye" art. She also does some other demented stuff like her little characters called "The Broken Ones".

If you like Tim Burton, Neil Gaiman and that sort of writing and art, go check these out. The minute I saw the videos she made with these characters, I was in awe. They are so demented but yet so lovely. I can't even explain it.

I am lucky because she gave me my own little miniature figurine. It's Walter. You need to go watch the video and see why I love Walter so much! If she does not write a book based on these characters  I would be very disappointed. Plus, she also has other awesome art. Her Etsy is here.

Anyway, we headed out and I remembered that one we had gone to the River Arts District and there were galleries and studios etc. We drove down there and stopped at a few galleries. The first one we walked into was fantastic. The first painting I saw, I fell in love with. It was just so striking.

The artist's name is Philip De Angelo and you can check out the site here. I took two pictures of the paintings I wanted. I wish I would have had $3,500 handy because that painting would be in my house as I type.

Well, we finished with the studios and then headed off to see more. Lizzy was starving and, as luck would have it, we were at the same place where 12 Bones is. 12 Bones is a BBQ joint. When we first moved to North Carolina, many people told us to eat there and we never did. But we drove by and decided to stop.

12 Bones is also the BBQ joint that President Obama visits every time he visits Asheville. Luckily, we found a parking spot because it was packed. We had to wait about 10-15 minutes before ordering but it was worth it.

I ordered a pull pork sandwich with collard greens and jalapeno cheese grits. The jalapeno cheese grits were the most amazing grits I have ever had in my life. The pulled pork was delish! The sauces were tasty and collard greens tasty. It was well worth the trip to Asheville.

After lunch, we headed to some other art places then downtown Asheville. By the time we hit downtown Asheville, it started raining so we headed back to my house. We spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out and yapping.

It was a good day.
